Final Project

You may choose ONE of the following projects to count as your final exam/project. All projects are due by Tuesday, June 12, 2012.

1. Ready or Not Tot Project- Tots will not be distributed unless the student has returned the contract signed and has provided a 9 volt battery. You will care for the tot for 24 hours and must complete the packet.

2. Epiquery Project- For this project you will be completing a packet about your community’s health profile compared to the rest of Staten Island and New York City.

3. Powerpoint presentation: Choose one of topics below and create a short (4-6 slides) Powerpoint presentation that displays the most important information regarding that topic. Powerpoint must have visuals and facts. You can email me your powerpoint at waltershealthprhs@gmail.com or place it in the Student Dropbox (Mrs. Walters Final Projects).

4. Health Topics Poster Campaign/Public Service Announcement: Create a poster that visually portrays an important message that you have learned from this class. Your poster must be creative and colorful. It must send a clear and strong message. Examples: anti-smoking, abstinence, don’t drink and drive, anti- dating violence, anti-bullying, etc. The poster must be orginal (not copied from another source) and must have a slogan. On the back of the poster include a paragraph that explains your poster and what you have learned about the topic. Poster must be on a 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper.

5. Letter: Write a persuasive letter to the school administration and/or a local politician about the importance of providing Health Education to high school students during their sophomore or junior year (instead of waiting until their senior year). To make your argument convincing, you must provide specific details about what you learned, your personal experience in the class, and other research and facts about adolescents and health (using the Youth Risk Behavior Survey results at www.cdc.gov or www.nyc.gov/heatlh will help you with getting facts).

Mental Health (communicating emotions, personality development, suicide, self esteem, mental illness, stress, stress management)
Violence and Injury Prevention (recognizing risk, lowering the risk of violence or injury, driving safety, rape and sexual assault, dating violence, bullying, stereotyping)
Nutrition and Fitness (nutrients, food pyramid, eating disorders, fitness)
Drugs (drug use vs. drug abuse, addiction, tobacco, alcohol, psychoactive drugs)
Sexual Health (male and female reproductive health, taking care of sexual health, abstinence, condom use, birth control, sexually transmitted infections)

Drug Research

Goal Setting Project

The goal setting project will start on Monday, April 9, 2012 and will end on Monday, April 30, 2012. The project consists of three parts.

Part 1: Personal Evaluation and Goal

Complete the worksheets and create a healthy eating/fitness goal. You will work to accomplish this goal over the next three weeks (April 9-27). Make sure your goal is very specific.

Part 1 of the project is due on April 6, 2012.

Part 2: Tracking My Progress

Every day, you will log what you have done to reach your goal on the Tracking My Progress worksheet. I will be checking this worksheet once a week (counts as a quiz), so make sure you bring this worksheet to class every day.

Part 2 of the project (Tracking my Progress worksheet) is due on April 27, 2012.

Part 3: Assessment

You will answer a few questions at the end of the three weeks to assess how you did in accomplishing your goal.

1. What was your goal?
2. How did you go about reaching your goal?
3. What sort of benefits (physical and/or mental) did you experience over the past three weeks?
4. What were the biggest challenes you faced, and how did you overcome these challenges?
5. Overall, do you feel you were successful in reaching your goal?
6. If you were to do this again, what would you do differently?

Part 3 of the project is due on April 30, 2012.

Drug Group Powerpoint

As a part of the course requirement, each student is require to write a research paper on a psychoactive drug. You will be working in groups to create a powerpoint that you will present on a drug. Each person will be responsible for specific research on the drug and will be presenting that research.

Your powerpoint must include:

1. A complete description of the substance, its usage history and classification.
2. The short and long term effects of this substance on the user and on the systems of the body.
3. Are there any medicinal uses for this substance?
4. What are the most effective methods of withdrawal and/or treatment for those who wish to stop using?
5. What are the alternate or "street names" for this substance?
6. What are the dangers associated with use?
In what ways is this substance unique?

A list of references or bibliography must be included. This list should contain journal articles, books, encyclopedias and websites.

Each person will be graded on the following:

20 points- individual presentation
20 points- collaboration skills/participation with group
60 points- content, knowledge and overall powerpoint presentation (whole group)
