1. Think of a person or role model that you would consider successful. This person can be famous or can be someone you know. Either way, you must research (or interview) them about their personal experiences and their viewpoint on effort and success. In paragraph form, answer the following questions:
a. Who is this person? What is their relationship to you?
b. What have they achieved or accomplished?
c. Explain the process or journey they took in order to get where they are today.
d. What types of setbacks or challenges did they encounter?
e. How did they overcome these setbacks?
f. What do you think they would say about the relationship between effort and success?
g. How can you relate to their personal story?
2. Research and describe the job description of a profession that you are interested in. Answer the following questions:
a. Explain the job or profession you are interested in.
b. Why do you choose this profession as a career choice?
c. What specific skills do you need (education, training) in order to be successful at this job?
d. What do you think an employer is looking for when hiring someone in this profession?
e. What sets you apart from all other applicants? What do you think you need to work at?
f. How would you practice/prepare for this career?
g. How would learning about effective effort help you in reaching your professional goals?
3. Read the article, Is There a Genius in All of Us? By David Shenk. Write a 1-page review to the article. The review is NOT a summary of what the article was about. The review should follow this format:
a. The name of the article and author
b. The overall issue the article addresses- include statistics, the importance of the topic and the background of the issue
c. Questions and reactions you had to the article
d. Your opinion
e. The “so what” of the issue. Why is this information important for people to know?
