Drug Group Powerpoint

As a part of the course requirement, each student is require to write a research paper on a psychoactive drug. You will be working in groups to create a powerpoint that you will present on a drug. Each person will be responsible for specific research on the drug and will be presenting that research.

Your powerpoint must include:

1. A complete description of the substance, its usage history and classification.
2. The short and long term effects of this substance on the user and on the systems of the body.
3. Are there any medicinal uses for this substance?
4. What are the most effective methods of withdrawal and/or treatment for those who wish to stop using?
5. What are the alternate or "street names" for this substance?
6. What are the dangers associated with use?
In what ways is this substance unique?

A list of references or bibliography must be included. This list should contain journal articles, books, encyclopedias and websites.

Each person will be graded on the following:

20 points- individual presentation
20 points- collaboration skills/participation with group
60 points- content, knowledge and overall powerpoint presentation (whole group)

Personality Collage: Due October 3, 2011

Create a collage on a piece of paper (8 1/2 x 11). Your collage should include pictures and words that describe your personality and interests. Your personality is the unique combination of traits that makes you an individual.
• DO NOT use photographs in your collage. DO NOT include pictures of illegal substances or inappropriate pictures.
• DO include different words that explain your personality traits, DO include pictures of things that represent your strengths, and DO represent your future aspirations in your collage.

Effective Effort Research Assignment

Directions: Choose ONE of the following assignments below. The rubric will provide you with guidelines on how you will be graded. Please put forth your best effort in completing this assignment. Each assignment should be one page in length (typed, double- spaced, 12 font, Times New Roman).

Due: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 during class

1. Think of a person or role model that you would consider successful. This person can be famous or can be someone you know. Either way, you must research (or interview) them about their personal experiences and their viewpoint on effort and success. In paragraph form, answer the following questions:
a. Who is this person? What is their relationship to you?
b. What have they achieved or accomplished?
c. Explain the process or journey they took in order to get where they are today.
d. What types of setbacks or challenges did they encounter?
e. How did they overcome these setbacks?
f. What do you think they would say about the relationship between effort and success?
g. How can you relate to their personal story?

2. Research and describe the job description of a profession that you are interested in. Answer the following questions:

3. Read the article, Is There a Genius in All of Us? By David Shenk. Write a 1-page review to the article. The review is NOT a summary of what the article was about. The review should follow this format:

b. The overall issue the article addresses- include statistics, the importance of the topic and the background of the issue
c. Questions and reactions you had to the article
d. Your opinion
e. The “so what” of the issue. Why is this information important for people to know?

In this assignment you are being asked to evaluate your current lifestyle and identify an area of your health that you think you need to improve. Include the following in your assignment:

There are THREE parts to this assignments:

Part 1- Identify WHAT you need to improve
• Use the blog to research the different dimensions of health.
• Identify which dimension of health you would like to improve.
• State specifically where you think you fall on the illness-wellness continuum for this dimension (use examples from the definition and from the Evaluate your Lifestyle worksheet to help you do this).

Part 2- Explain HOW you can improve this dimension
• Identify 3 ways you could improve this dimension of health and what life skills you would use.
Identify what lifestyle factors are holding you back from making this change

Part 3- Hypothesize how improving this dimension will affect your overall health/future
• How would improving this dimension improve some of the other dimensions of health?
• Predict your future if you continue to follow the current path you are on vs. making this improvement. Be specific.

Marking Period 3 Assignments

The following assignments will be counted toward the thrid marking period.

Marking Period 3 Final Project:

You have three options for this marking period's project:

Option 1- "Ready or Not Tot" project- you must bring back the contract and a 9 volt battery in order to sign up for a "ready or not tot." Only those who sign up will have the option of doing this project.

Option 2- PowerPoint Presentation on ANY topic we discussed throughout the semester

Option 3- Create a poster "Public Service Announcement" on a topic

Option 4- Write a dialogue or skit discussing one of the topics from the semester

Option 5- Write a letter to the administration, arguing the importance of Health Education during freshmen or sophomore year (not waiting until senior year).

All projects will be handed out during the week of May 23- 27, 2011. All projects are due by June 10, 2011.

The following assignments are due before the end of the 2nd Marking Period (April 29, 2011)

1. Mental Health Essay:

Answer the following questions about the Mental and Emotional Health Unit. Your answers must be in essay form.

1. What kinds of things did you learn?
2. Why are these things important for a person to know or be able to do?
3. How and when will you use what you have learned?
4. How will you be healthier or safer because of what you know or can do?

2. Media Analysis Worksheet

Complete the worksheet, which calls for you to look for stereotyping in the media.

3. Violence and Injury Prevention Pamphlet

Create a “Health Actions Pamphlet” to share what you have learned in this unit with others and help others make safer choices.

Guidelines:

Fold a piece of paper into thirds. Include the following in your pamphlet:

o Your pamphlet should be colorful, neat and organized

Facts/Statistics (10 points)
o Your facts must be accurate (two points per fact)
o Use the websites on the blog to find accurate information

Prevention Strategies (15 points)
o Your prevention strategies include practical things teenagers can do to reduce their risk of unintentional injury.
o Must be based on factual information.
 Example: Prevention Strategies for Sexual Assault: Don’t drink: 50% of victims and 75% of perpetrators were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the sexual assault.
o Do NOT repeat facts

Test Grade 1: Skedula Grade Book

This assignment counts as a TEST GRADE.
